There is one day every year when millions of Malaysians share the same feeling.
It is the day our Jalur Gemilang flies proudly across the nation. Streets come alive with red and white, patriotic songs fill the air, and families gather to celebrate the journey of our beloved Malaysia.
Every 31st August, we celebrate Hari Merdeka—a day of gratitude, unity and national pride.
At COCAKERY Cottage, we wanted to celebrate this meaningful occasion in our own way.
Particularly us as bakers, we may not wave the largest flag or organise the biggest gathering, but we can create something that brings people together around the table.
A Small Cake with a Big Malaysian Heart
This August, we proudly introduce our Seasonal Merdeka Collection—a handcrafted Bento Cake in Selayang, specially created to celebrate Malaysia’s National Day.
Although it measures just four inches in diameter, this little cake carries a big Malaysian heart.
Meanwhile, for the flavour, we looked no further than our own heritage.
Inspired by Malaysia’s Beloved Flavours
Pandan and Gula Melaka.
These are flavours that many Malaysians grew up loving. The fragrant aroma of pandan paired with the rich caramel sweetness of Gula Melaka creates a combination that feels comforting, familiar and unmistakably local. To us, there could not be a more fitting flavour to honour our nation’s birthday.
Every Merdeka Bento Cake is beautifully finished with our handcrafted buttercream flower.
Handcrafted Hibiscus Buttercream Flowers
This year, our inspiration comes from Malaysia’s national flower—the Hibiscus, or Bunga Raya.
The Hibiscus is more than just a beautiful flower. It represents courage, unity and the vibrant spirit of our nation.
By using classic buttercream recipe, each Hibiscus flower is carefully piped by hand.
Our Hibiscus are two tones colours, featuring layers of white and red buttercream creating petals that appear delicate and lifelike. Together with its green stem and flower bud, the design captures the elegance of the Bunga Raya in a form that is entirely edible.
Each petal is patiently shaped.
Every flower is handcrafted.
Producing each cake unique.
Although our Merdeka Bento Cake is small in size, it is made for sharing. Comfortably serving up to five people, it is perfect for a family gathering, an office celebration or a simple afternoon tea on Merdeka Day.
Sometimes, the sweetest celebrations are small ones and shared around a small table with the people who matter most.
Celebrate Together with Floral Cupcakes
For those who would like everyone to enjoy their own little flower, we also offer our handcrafted floral cupcakes.
Decorated with individual buttercream blooms, they are a delightful choice for schools, offices, community events or family gatherings, allowing every guest to have a beautiful piece of the celebration.
Our Merdeka Collection is available only during the month of August, making it a seasonal creation that celebrates a special moment in the Malaysian calendar. Like Merdeka itself, it comes once a year, reminding us to pause, celebrate and appreciate the country we proudly call home.
