Searching For Our Signature Style
Every baker hopes to create something that people will instantly recognise as their own. A signature creation that reflects not only their skills but also their passion and personality.
For us at COCAKERY, that journey led to our Flower Basket Cake.
Experimenting Beyond Smooth Buttercream
When we first started decorating cakes, our buttercream coating was far from perfect.
Some areas were covered with a thick layer of buttercream, while others were much thinner, leaving an uneven finish.
We spent countless hours practising, learning how to hold the scraper steadily and apply just the right amount of buttercream to create a smooth, even surface.
As our confidence grew, we began exploring several design ideas using simple buttercream piping technique.
Like many buttercream cakes, the surface was smoothly frosted with a simple finish. Although it looked neat and elegant, we felt that something was missing. It was beautiful, yet it did not leave a lasting impression.
We wanted our cakes to tell a story the moment someone saw them.
To add texture, we experimented with decorating the cakes using grated cake as a finishing touch.
Sometimes it covered the top, while at other times it surrounded the sides of the cake. It gave the cakes a rustic appearance and added a pleasant contrast to the smooth buttercream.
Yet, deep in our hearts, we knew we had not quite found what we were looking for.
Rediscovering The Basket Weave
Then we remembered a technique that had stayed with us since baking school.
The buttercream basket weave.

Unlike many modern cake decorations, the basket weave is created entirely by hand, piping one strip at a time until the cake resembles a handwoven basket.
It is a classic cake decorating technique that requires patience, consistency and a steady hand.
Even a slight variation in pressure or spacing can affect the overall pattern.
Perhaps that is why it is not commonly seen in many cake shops today. It is time-consuming and demands careful attention from beginning to end.
But we asked ourselves a simple question.
Why not make this our signature?
Practising Until The Basket Came To Life
The beginning was far from perfect.
Some basket patterns looked uneven. Others lacked the neat woven effect we had imagined. There were moments when we wondered whether the technique was simply too difficult to master. Yet every cake became a lesson, and every lesson made the next basket a little better.
Slowly, we discovered the rhythm.
Our hands became steadier. The woven pattern grew more defined. The basket began to take shape just as we had envisioned. What once felt challenging gradually became a craft we truly enjoyed.
Every Flower Tells a Story
Then came the finishing touch that completed the story.
Using traditional buttercream recipe, we carefully piped delicate petals one by one, transforming them into blooming flowers. Soft shades of yellow, beige, red and other harmonious colours brought the basket to life.
Every flower was individually handcrafted and thoughtfully arranged, creating the impression of a freshly gathered bouquet from a cottage garden.
More Than a Beautiful Cake
From a distance, it looks like a basket filled with freshly picked flowers.
Look a little closer, and you’ll discover a delightful surprise.
Every flower is made of buttercream.
Each petal is edible.
Every bloom is waiting to be enjoyed.
That is the joy of our Flower Basket Cake. It captures the beauty of a flower basket while remaining a handcrafted cake made for sharing with family and friends. Pair it with a cup of freshly brewed coffee, a smooth café latte or a comforting cup of chocolate, and the experience becomes even more memorable.
